Housing
Rent is estimated using the number of bedrooms and a market benchmark for the selected city.
Cost of Living Calculator
Build a realistic monthly budget for living in Spain based on the city, your housing situation, household size, ages, and—when relevant—the type of school your children would attend.
The estimate includes the major expenses that can shape your monthly budget: rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, private health insurance, and education. You can also add a car, a pet, leisure spending, and trips back to the United States when they are part of your plans.
Tell us what your household would look like and include only the expenses you realistically expect to have while living in Spain.
Compare the same household and lifestyle across different cities. This shows how much location alone can change the budget without changing your personal circumstances.
Your estimate is built around the circumstances you select. Housing reflects the city and number of bedrooms, while groceries, utilities, and transportation adjust to household size and location. Private health insurance is estimated separately for each adult based on age. For children, age determines whether daycare or school costs apply; school options include public, publicly funded private (concertado), private, and international schools. Car costs depend on the category you choose, while pet and leisure spending start with suggested amounts you can edit. Trips to the United States are added only when you choose to include them.
Sources and methodology
This calculator does not rely on a single nationwide average. The model combines official statistics, market reports, and sector-specific benchmarks for the major expenses that make up a household budget in Spain.
Rental assumptions are checked against price reports from major Spanish real estate portals. Household spending patterns draw on Spain’s Household Budget Survey and other official consumer data. Telecom assumptions also use Spain’s CNMC Household Panel. Education categories are cross-checked against Ministry of Education information, while healthcare assumptions use public Ministry of Health information and market benchmarks for private health insurance by age.
The figures are planning estimates designed to compare scenarios. They are not an offer, quote, or contractual budget. Actual costs can vary based on the property, provider, coverage selected, and your personal circumstances.

How to read your result
Use the result to compare cities and build an initial budget on a consistent basis. Your actual cost will depend on the specific home you choose, your habits, the coverage you purchase, and the details of your household.
Rent is estimated using the number of bedrooms and a market benchmark for the selected city.
Groceries, utilities, and transportation are adjusted to reflect cost differences between the cities being compared.
Private health insurance is estimated for each adult based on age. The actual premium will depend on the insurer, coverage, and underwriting or enrollment terms.
Children’s ages and the type of school provide a starting point for estimating education costs. A specific school choice still needs to be reviewed based on the city, availability, and your family’s needs.
